Camino Day 13 - Águeda to Albergaria-a-Velha

I think Águeda's umbrellas were a portent of things to come. Although we had a short day of walking today (Thursday, September 8th), it was a rainy day. This is the first time we've had to dig out our rain jackets and put rain covers on our backpacks. The temperature was in the 70’s, but we had enough rain coming down that we kept our rain jackets on most of the day. For anyone who has ever worn a waterproof jacket for any length of time, you can appreciate the clamminess we were experiencing inside those jackets as we trudged along the @ 11 miles to Albergaria-a-Velha.

We stopped in the town of Serém de Cima at Casa Leonel for one of the best meals we’ve had this entire trip. This is a family run cafe with Leonel’s grandson João (John) serving us while his aunt prepared our meal in the kitchen. Portuguese meals tend to feature beef, pork and seafood, but very little chicken so it was a refreshing change to be offered a meal featuring chicken, especially chicken prepared with mushrooms in a light lemony sauce. SO good!

As we got up to leave, João asked if he could take our picture for his pilgrim wall. In exchange, we asked if we could get a picture of him with all of us. Something was lost in the translation, and we ended up with a picture of his aunt with us. Still, a wonderful memory.
